Handloom Industry in Bundelkhand

Handloom production is dwindling due to severe competition, poor marketing links and lack of finance

While handloom weaving is a major cottage industry in UP, directly providing livelihood to over 200,000 people in the state, there is no major handloom production centre in Bundelkhand.

However, several hundred families are engaged in this activity in some parts of the region.

The largest number of weavers are found in Jhansi district, where there were nearly 3000 household handloom units in 1995-96, a Planning Commission study reported; of these, 2680 were with a loom. Around 3000 people including some women and children were engaged full-time in weaving; in addition, there were around 900 people engaged part-time in this activity. More than 90% of the weavers belonged to scheduled castes.

The majority of looms used cotton yarn. However, in the Mau Ranipur area, some weaver families produce terene-blended cloth which goes by the name of Ranipur terrycot. Monthly production in Jhansi district in 1995-96 was around 5.70 lakh metres of cloth; saris were the main item of production. [Planning Commission, Vol II, pp 92-96 ]

Other significant but smaller handloom production centres in Bundelkhand are Lalitpur, Jalaun and Hamirpur districts, Jaitpur in Mahoba district, and some blocks of Tikamgarh district. This unorganised sector faces many problems like obsolete technology and design, fierce price and volume competition from the powerloom sector, low productivity, inadequate working capital and poor marketing links.
