Educational Attainment of ST Groups

Most Sahariya children in the age group of 5 to 15 years do not go to school

One important reason low progress attained by ST groups is low educational attainment.

Even  amongst MP Gonds, who may be considered the most 'advanced' tribal group in the state, the literacy rate recorded by Census 2001 was only around  50%, and even among these 'literates', the overwhelming majority had not studied beyond primary school.

Census 2001 data showed that less than 1.5% of MP's STs were graduates and less than 7% had completed secondary school education.

Among MP Kols, the literacy rate was around 36%. Sahariyas had the lowest literacy rate (28.7%) among all ST groups in MP.

Less than a fifth of Sahariya women were literate and only around a third of Sahariya children in the age group of 5 to 15 years went to school. Less than 2% of Sahariyas had completed secondary school education.
